What is a faculty mentor?

Mentoring offers new skills

Through mentoring, faculty members share experiences, expertise, and advice on research, teaching, and other professional concerns with students and less-experienced colleagues. Mentors serve as guides for students to their institution and its culture, as well as act as research advisors, teaching resources, and role models for success in research and academia. Plans are tools for success

Mentoring a less-experienced researcher is a professional responsibility of all scientists. The ultimate goal of the mentor is to establish the trainee as an independent researcher in their field. The best way to ensure this outcome is to lay the groundwork for success early through a detailed mentorship plan. We've included a template below of such a plan to get you started.

Mentoring isn't easy but it's needed

The University of Wisconsin-Madison has created the National Research Mentoring Network (NRMN) to help develop, evaluate, and disseminate evidence-based curricula to train research mentors and mentees in establishing effective mentoring relationships.
